After completing your Vibe Check and Narrative Prep, it's time to engage one of your most powerful job search tools: your professional network. Many job seekers are advised to "use your network," but few are taught how to do so effectively. This guide will help you activate your network with confidence, clarity, and respect.

Networking

🔗 What Does It Mean to "Activate Your Network"?

Activating your network involves reaching out to contacts—former colleagues, classmates, mentors, or acquaintances—to seek insights, advice, and potential opportunities. It's about initiating meaningful conversations that can lead to referrals, recommendations, or valuable information.

🌡️ Understanding "Warm" vs. "Cold" Contacts

Warm Contacts: Individuals you have an existing relationship with—people you've worked with, studied alongside, or met through mutual connections.

Cold Contacts: Individuals you haven't interacted with before.

Start with your warm contacts. They're more likely to respond positively and assist you in your job search

✅ How to Activate Your Network

  1. Identify Your Contacts: Make a list of people in your professional and personal circles who might offer guidance or connections in your desired field.

  2. Craft a Thoughtful Message: Reach out with a personalized message. Express genuine interest in reconnecting and briefly explain your current career goals.

  3. Be Specific: Clearly articulate what you're seeking—be it advice, information about a company, or an introduction to someone in a particular role.

  4. Offer Value: Networking is a two-way street. Offer your assistance or share resources that might benefit your contact.

  5. Follow Up and Express Gratitude: Always thank your contacts for their time and help. Keep them updated on your progress and maintain the relationship beyond your immediate needs.

🚫 What Not to Do

  • Don't Ask Directly for a Job: Instead, seek advice or information that can lead to opportunities.

  • Don't Be Vague: Clearly state your objectives to make it easier for your contacts to assist you.

  • Don't Neglect the Relationship: Avoid reaching out only when you need something. Maintain regular, genuine interactions.

  • Don’t be scared. They can sense fear.  It can be very uncomfortable to ask someone for something. It is a skill, not a talent, and you will get better with time. We humans are communal animals. We crave community, and community means asking as well as giving. Helping each other is in our blood.

🤝 Building and Maintaining Relationships

Effective networking is about building lasting relationships, not just transactional interactions. Engage with your contacts regularly, share updates, and celebrate their successes. This ongoing engagement fosters trust and mutual support.
